About Highland Elementary School

he New Highland Elementary School was established in 1949 and reincorporated as a not for profit educational corporation in 1989. At that time, the Highland Middle School was founded for grades five through eight. The school is licensed by the New York City Board of Health and the New York State Education Department. The New Highland Elementary School (K – 8) in Fresh Meadows is a small private, non-religious school with approximately 135 students. Our small class size (average size 15) enables teachers to focus on providing individualized instruction, learning the strengths and weaknesses of individual students. It enables the Director and faculty to work together in each student’s interest – sharing ideas, solving common problems and developing individual learning strategies, including both support and enrichment. Core competencies are learned by the students at our school, supported by the use of various technological tools. Our students gain sound study skills, good work habits and an appreciation of learning. A strong program in art, music, foreign language, computer education and PE complements the basic curriculum. Our campus houses a computer lab, music room, and full gym, with frequent use of the fields across the street. Our 8th grade graduates go on to prestigious and intensive academic high schools including Bronx Science, Styvesant, Brooklyn Tech, Townsend Harris, the Law program at Francis Lewis HS, Archbishop Molloy, The Mary Lewis Academy, St. Francis Prep and Regis, among others. Our alumni have been accepted at Harvard, Yale, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, NYU, Stonybrook, Binghamton and Columbia, to name a few.
